Choosing a Bag for the Way You Travel
Match the bag to the trip, then compare capacity, handles, zips, wheels, and empty weight before you decide.
Match the size to the trip
Start with what you need to carry and for how long. A backpack or smaller shoulder bag suits items you want close at hand; a weekender or duffel gives soft-sided space for a short trip; wheeled luggage can make a heavier load easier to move. Compare the internal capacity with the bag’s outside dimensions, since thick walls and pockets can reduce usable space.
If you plan to carry the bag onto an aircraft, check the current size and weight limits with your airline before travelling. Cabin rules vary and can change, so a generic “carry-on size” is not a guarantee.
Inspect the parts that take the strain
Open and close every zip, check that seams around straps and handles are secure, and look at the base where the bag will meet the ground. On wheeled luggage, roll it a short distance and extend the handle to see whether it locks comfortably. For a backpack, adjust the straps and check that they sit flat without digging in.
Think about weight and organization
An empty bag can already feel heavy, so lift it before adding your belongings. Consider whether you need a separate space for shoes, documents, or smaller items, and whether the pockets are easy to reach while travelling. The best option is the one that fits your routine without adding features you will not use.
